Expert Guide to Setting Up Your Axolotl Tank

I have spent years keeping exotic pets. Here is what actually works.

Temperature Control and Water Quality Axolotls are cold-water creatures that thrive in temperatures between 60°F and 64°F (16°C-18°C). Do not use heat lamps or heating elements, as their water temperature needs to remain cool. Maintaining pristine water quality is the most critical aspect of their care. To achieve this without causing dangerous water currents, you should invest in a high-quality filtration system like a fluval external canister filter. External filters allow for large media capacity and gentle flow, which prevents the axolotl from being sucked into the intake or stressed by turbulence.

Substrate Selection Unlike many amphibians that live on land, axolotls swim entirely underwater, making substrate choice vital for their safety. They tend to eat small items if they mistake them for food. Avoid sharp gravel or tiny pebbles. Instead, opt for fine grain river sand. This substrate is heavy enough not to blow around easily but soft enough to be safe if the axolotl ingests some accidentally. It also provides a natural feel and allows them to sift through it without damaging their delicate gills.

Containment and Safety Axolotls are known for being excellent jumpers, so containment is paramount to prevent injury or escape from the habitat. You must ensure your tank is fully covered but allows for oxygen exchange. Use a secure tank hood that fits snugly over your aquarium without gaps. These lids often come with built-in ventilation slots or allow you to attach an air stone securely. Proper containment also helps maintain water temperature and humidity levels, ensuring a stable environment for this unique amphibian species.
